Payne Security's Capability up to the Challenge of CORGI's Latest Card Project

Corgi Cards

Issue Date: August 2006

Payne Security’s enhanced capabilities in personal ID solutions following the recent acquisition of CSL Digital Print have been underlined by a complex customer application, requiring extensive variable information to be shown within one ID card, for CORGI, the UK’s gas safety watchdog.

For the last six years, CSL Digital Print has produced ID cards for CORGI to demonstrate the identity and gas safety competencies of registered gas operatives.  This year, the brief was different and extended to include all the variable information needed for over 110,000 registered operatives. The amount of information to be incorporated in the card included 127 different fields, resulting in thousands of permutations, and Payne Security now has responsibility for printing these onto a single sophisticated card layout.

The CORGI ID card is issued to every registered operative, each of whom is required to carry their card to prove to customers that they are legally allowed to work on their gas appliances.  Every CORGI ID card includes the member’s details, their photo and a checklist of categories of work in which they are competent.  Additional variables include a range of new membership schemes at CORGI, having the member’s details embossed in Braille for the blind & visually impaired and the option to include an additional company logo within the overall design, all of which combine to create a massive amount of variables.

CORGI requires the use of a single card design for all members, with individual information for each operative included or omitted as applicable. Using the company’s range of digital technologies for variable data printing, meant the layout of each ID card can change without needing new artwork for each variable.  It also enables the production the cards using a single database as the source: another important requirement of the brief.

The software works by creating rules for each of the fields, which are automatically activated if a field was populated.  For example, if a company logo is included a rule would be activated to insert a dividing line to separate the logo from other information.  A rule was created for the checklist to amend the background from a tint to a solid when an item was added to the list.

Occasionally a date was necessary on the checklist instead of a tick and another rule would ensure this would be in a different colour and font.

CORGI Registered Installers renew their annual registration during the first three months of the year, and Payne Security anticipates that over 5,000 cards a day will be produced at peak times, printed on the HP Indigo Press.

“We are delighted to be able to continue to provide the service that CORGI needs, with the inclusion of all the additional information within the sophisticated design of the new ID card,” comments David Hayward, General Operations Manager for Payne Security, Personal ID.

“Ensuring that the correct information is presented on each member’s ID card is crucial and, having helped to achieve this challenge in 2006, I look forward to building on this performance with the support of Payne Security’s considerable expertise in personal ID,” he adds.

Payne Security will also look to support CORGI in its drive to develop further Competent Persons Schemes supporting consumers, gas installers and associated trades and industries through the provision of secure ID. This new business is in addition to the millions of cards Payne Security already supplies to identify personnel across the public and private sector.

"We are very excited to have secured a long term contract with a customer as prestigious as CORGI and look forward to partnering them as they seek to grow their business. In addition the combination of Payne Security's experience and knowledge within the personal ID business and our newly acquired print and card manufacturing expertise, will provide an ideal solution to the increasing demand for sophisticated secure card designs," comments Mark Palmer, General Manager for Payne Security, Personal ID.
