History

Established in 2005, Payne was created through the merger of the 3 Filtrona businesses - PP Payne, Morane and Laminex. Each business was well established in its chosen markets which has provided Payne with a strong platform for future growth.

Tear tape

Founded in 1911, PP Payne built an excellent reputation for innovation within the packaging industry and brings to the organisation the experience of a worldwide leader in the manufacture of tear tape.

In the 1950’s the business developed Rippatape, the first tear tape based on cotton fibres, used for easy opening of boxes and sacks. From this first heavy-duty tear tape solution, Payne went on to develop a range of tear tape offerings for new markets including Supastrip, developed in the mid 1980’s. It was the world’s first lightweight self adhesive tear tape for consumer packaging and in 1995 Vaktape brought the benefits of easy opening to hermetically sealed packs.

By the 1990’s its innovative products and expanding overseas network established Payne as a major player in the tear tape market, particularly in the tobacco sector. The tear tape business now boasts two fully integrated plants - one in Nottingham, UK, the other in Richmond, Virginia with an additional three converting operations in Latin America and Asia. Each of the two principal manufacturing sites operate between them, 3 state-of-the-art Rotomec gravure printing presses, 3 large scale adhesive coating machines together with a range of slitting and converting machinery. Furthermore, Payne’s design & reprographics expertise enables multinational customers and owners of significant domestic brands the opportunity to use tear tape to promote their products and communicate with their customers in an imaginative yet cost effective manner.

Payne now offers the ability to provide easy-opening, branding & communications and security solutions to meet changing needs in a variety of markets, ranging from food and tobacco to pharmaceutical and medical supplies. Payne Security's brand protection function is dedicated to helping businesses continually shield their products from counterfeiting, pass-off, theft and fraud.

Coated film

Morane brought a wealth of experience in high quality coated film for print presentation and document authentication. Founded in 1935, the company quickly established itself as a leading specialist supplier to the European print finishing trade. The business has continually invested in modern extrusion coating equipment, culminating with investment in a state-of-the-art extrusion line in 2001, giving a total annual production capacity of 70 million square metres.

A major contributor to the company’s success is its premium brand, Morafast, a range of exceptionally clear gloss films which operate at low melt temperatures, ideal for meeting the needs for high gloss finishes in the print presentation market. Payne has added specialist finishing and printing capability to this extrusion coating expertise and now has a strong position as a provider of security laminates which assist in the authentication of important documents such as passports, national ID cards and driving licences.

More recently the business has invested further in development and is now able to offer a range of custom extrusion coating solutions for industrial applications. Morane’s modern facilities in the UK have also been complemented by sales and distribution operations in France and Spain.

Personal ID

Laminex, a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of personal ID systems, cards and visitor management solutions has brought over 30 years experience in the ID market to Payne Security. Among the wide range of personal ID products is IDPro7, which enables customers to produce sophisticated ID cards in-house and is used extensively in a variety of sectors from healthcare and education to local government and industry.

The business’s portfolio of systems and cards are supported by a range of ID accessories which give a wide variety of options for displaying and wearing all types of personal ID, and are available through a comprehensive catalogue and website. In 1999 Laminex expanded the business geographically with the acquisition of EasyCard in Madrid, offering a dedicated personal ID service to the Spanish market.
